Steam Is Back Online And Running Normally

Steam001

Last night, Steam had more than a little hiccup, going offline for a little while to sort out a rather unfortunate issue that was mixing up users profiles, giving people random access to other people's accounts and generally just causing havoc. There were fears that this was a large hack on Christmas day, but those seem unfounded.

Valve have now given a statement to GameSpot saying:

Steam is back up and running without any known issues. As a result of a configuration change earlier today, a caching issue allowed some users to randomly see pages generated for other users for a period of less than an hour. This issue has since been resolved. We believe no unauthorized actions were allowed on accounts beyond the viewing of cached page information and no additional action is required by users.

I've seen a few hacking groups trying to take credit for the take down, but from all my digging, this seems to be untrue and they are just trying to make a name for themselves as Lizard Squad did last Christmas.

Still, stay vigilant. Even more are threatening to attack servers today and the like.
