Zelda Developers Say Breath of the Wild Has a Place on the Series Timeline, But They're Not Ready to Say Where Yet
Developers on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have talked a little about where the game fits in the timeline of the series, and how while they know, they don't want to reveal it just yet.
The timeline of Zelda has always seemed a little abstract to me. It's clearly not really a super strict thing and in the end, doesn't usually factor into the games, but there are certainly clues it exists and it's something fans love arguing over. Speaking to GamesRadar, Hideomaro Fujibayashi and Eiji Aonuma have talked about Breath of the Wild's position in the timeline. It's worth saying it does have one, but the team are staying tight-lipped about it at the moment.
Fujibayashi said:
I wouldn't say that we're not concerned with the timeline. It's obviously something that we know is very important to people, and they do a lot of research on. But I think at this point, we're not really at the stage where we want to talk about where Breath of the Wild is in the timeline. I think, as with the pixelated food, it's something that at this point we want to leave up to people's imaginations.
Anouma parroted:
We published a book with the timeline, but we definitely got comments from users saying, 'Is this really accurate? I think this should be this way. It's different.' And history is always kind of imaginative. It's left to the person who writes the book. So that's how we approach it as well. It's not necessarily that we come up with a game and think, 'Oh, this is where it fits in the timeline.' Honestly, lately, we're kind of scared to say exactly where things are in the timeline for that reason. But we like to leave things to the imagination most of the time.
Honestly, I think this is for the best anyways. Fans love arguing about all of this, so why put a definite point on it, even if it has one. It's fun to keep that discussion rolling on.
