The Arrow Season Finale Was About More Than Who Lived And Who Died

If you haven't seen the Season 5 finale for Arrow, I'll do my best to avoid spoilers here…but come on, what are you waiting for?

The episode ends with a bang, placing a lot of the characters in mortal jeopardy — except for Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell). So the question fans have been asking since the episode aired has basically been, "Who lives and who dies?" But is that really the right question to be asking?

Arrow

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim was on Entertainment Weekly Radio's Superhero Insider and talked about what fans should really be considering:

"A lot of the discussion that we've had and a lot of the discussion we've seen online is very binary — people either live or they'll die. There are other consequences that can come out of what happened at the end of [episode] 523. While everyone is focused on one thing, you know us on Arrow, we may be doing something else."

Guggenheim makes a very valid point. The events of the finale could drastically change characters without taking their lives. The physical and emotional toil of what happened could permanently change the series going forward. I don't think we are going to start Season 6 with a two category checklist showing dead characters and living ones. We'll get to see the effects on those who survived.

Arrow returns for its 6th season on October 12 at its new night and time, Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST on the CW.
