Last night we had the second part of Barry Allen and Cisco Ramon's trip to Earth-2. Some good things happened and some very bad things happened. And of course they give us a huge clue to something… we're not sure what… or it could be a McGuffin… but we'll get to that as we talk about the important moments from Escape From Earth-2.
1 – We start off with Barry of Earth-1 in a cell between Jesse Wells and a guy in an iron mask. Barry tries to keep Jesse's hopes up, talking to her about her dad and saying they will get out. But the thing that pulls them together is trying to figure out what the man in the iron mask is trying to say with his tapping. This not only brings the two of them closer but it starts the set-up that builds through the entire episode.
2 – Zoom is upset, knowing Harrison Wells has to be back on Earth-2 and is hunting for him. Why Zoom didn't go and check Wells' laboratory first I don't know. Seems like a lap through STAR Labs could have saved a lot of time making up flyers… and seriously? Zoom made flyers? There are big gaps in time here though… with Zoom leaving the prisoners alone, like he had to be somewhere else a lot. This isn't really a moment but rather missing moments that matter here.
3 – Back on Earth-1, Caitlin Snow and Jay Garrick continue to work on the Velocity serums until they get to Velocity 9 which not only gives Jay a longer period of speed but also works towards curing him. He uses it to save a building full of people but is conveniently not around when Geomancer attacks STAR labs. This leaves Caitlin and Iris West to capture the metahuman… which they do. So where was Jay? Is he that deep of a sleeper?
4 – Okay, and now the elephant in the room… the guy in the Iron Mask. In the classic novel The Man In the Iron Mask by Alexander Dumas, the prisoner was the twin of King Louis XIV. To use it here in this series means either the prisoner has some kind of power involving his face / voice or his face gives away a secret that Zoom doesn't want know. Deciphering his code spelled out the word Jay which he meant Jay Garrick… but what about Jay? Barry assumed he was asking about the one that went to Earth-1. But the episode wants us to think that either Jay is the guy in the mask or Jay is Zoom. Either way, Garrick has been lying about something.
5 – With Barry 1 in the cell, it's Barry 2 that helps them find Killer Frost and get's them to Zoom's lair… but the important moment here is when he talks to Barry 1 to inspire him to get out of the cell. When the series began there is the scene where Oliver Queen tells Barry that he can inspire people to be more. Here the writer's remind us of that as the non-powered Barry finds a way to inspire the speedster.
6 – The ending was the surprise moment of the episode… or was it? When everyone jumped through the portal and then Jay closed it, he then stepped towards the portal a few feet and turned his back, like he was getting into position. This was too noticeable to not be on purpose. This whole episode was crafted to shed doubt on Jay Garrick. This opens a lot of questions including is Jay Garrick actually Zoom? Is he working with Zoom? Was Zoom's real plan to steal Barry's speed? Or did it have to do with getting Caitlin to create Velocity 9?
The one last thing to keep in mind when trying to figure out this mystery. Barry was kept in a cell with clear walls he couldn't go through (until the end) and that was just by going faster. Jesse was kept in a cell with metal bars. Was Barry in a cell meant to hold speedsters? If so, the Iron Mask guy was in the same kind of cell as Barry.
Looks like Zoom gets moved to the back burner now that Jesse is safe and the portals are closed. Just in time for John Diggle and Lyla Michaels to come calling about King Shark.
