"Arena" Has a Surprisingly Tame Meta Now – "Magic: The Gathering"

Hey there, loyal readers! I wanted to address a couple of things regarding Magic: The Gathering: Arena and my usage thereof over the past few weeks. Normally, I'd save this sort of article for a day mid-month, but I think it's got some relevance now, before Theros: Beyond Death is released.

So, for the past few days or so I've been grinding my handle (Kalkris#76764, for anyone interested), trying to make real my dream of having a monoblack devotion deck when the new set finally arrives. I have not been able to try out Brawl as a format yet, mind you, but the desire to make a Brawl deck formed soon into gaining the necessary pieces for the deck I want in Standard.

So, I built a seemingly-rudimentary decklist, which can be found here. And it's doing very well. No, you don't understand: It's good. I had experimented with mono-red Cavalcade of Calamity in the past (I did say I'm that person!), and it was harder to take wins with it than this deck by a large margin. That deck, for me, had a win rate of maybe 30-40%. This one? A solid 70-80%, so far.

But why? Am I slipping under the radar of the metagame with this build? I did manage to overtake mono-green with a forgotten boatload of Revenge of Ravens triggers when my opponent was too busy setting up to attack me (Revenge of Ravens is great, by the way. Don't sit on it!), and that felt like my greatest Arena accomplishment that evening.

Could it be that I got under the skin of the metagame? Are the professionals not playing unranked Standard play right now? Are most people just biding their time for our trip to Theros? Or am I just lucky?

At whatever rate, I'm going to be playing later today to test that luck. Wish me… Erm, luck.
