A Different Kind Of RPG In 'Legrand Legacy' At PAX West

One of the last games I got to see in the Indie Megabooth was an interesting RPG title from Indonesia-based SEMISOFT called Legrand Legacy. I didn't get a long demo of the game, but I got a good enough sense of what was going on. SO much of this game played into classic JRPG styles, it reminded me a lot of when I first played Final Fantasy VII with the somewhat free movement to go anywhere on a level I was in, with the added caveat that I could see the enemies coming and do by best to dodge.

Probably the weirdest part of the demo for Legrand Legacy was the combat system. The bonus I found to it is that enemies will be highlighted by a symbol below them and depending on the color, you'll see whether that fighter is effective or not against them. Plus, you can swap someone out (only once per slot) to possibly bring in someone better. The downside is that after you select your targets, you get a ticking clock timer where you need to hit a specific button at the right time, or your attack doesn't even happen. I applaud the originality, but the effectiveness drew out too many fights that should have been done with in a matter of moments. The game looks rad and you can play a pre-alpha version on Steam right now if you want to try it out. But we'll see how much of this demo holds up as the game gets closer to a 2018 launch.
