DreamHack & Epic Games Partner Up For a New Fortnite Tournament

This week, DreamhHack and Epic Games announced they had formed a new partnership to create a new Fortnite esports tournament series. This summer they will be running what is to be called the DreamHack Open, which will feature Fortnite as part of the lineup. The launch of this new tournament series will include a monthly prize pool of $250k, with a grand total of $1.75 million throughout the entire event, which will be broadcasted live on Twitch. Fans throughout Europe and North America will be able to participate, though no word yet if it is individual-based or if there will be a team competition. But we do know the competitions are open for all and not invite based. The kick-off edition will take place on July 17th-19th and July 24th-26th, 2020. Each month afterward until January 2021 will follow a regular schedule on Thursdays and Fridays. Here's a quick quote from the announcement this week.

"DreamHack has a unique standing and position in the global gaming and esports community, and we are very pleased to see yet another leading publisher acknowledge this by trusting them with production of their esports formats for their strongest titles," says MTG's President and CEO Jørgen Madsen Lindemann.

With COVID-19 basically playing havoc with the esports schedules of every game on the planet, it only makes sense that these two companies would come together to find an online solution. But will it be able to capture the same magic and energy that was rampant throughout the 2019 schedule that Epic Games was keeping? Only time will tell when they start registering people and making the tournament a reality. We'll see who signs up for this one and how well everyone involved will be able to keep pace with a tournament based solely online.
