'Magic: The Gathering' Gets Japanese Art Planeswalkers!

I'm not a big Magic: The Gathering guy, but I love me some Final Fantasy, so imagine my excitement when it was announced that Yoshitaka Amano was going to be providing the art for a Magic: The Gathering card!

A number of Japanese artists have been asked to provide art for the Japanese language release of the War of the Spark expansion, which led to 36 unique Planeswalker cards being developed for the set:

War of the Spark is all about Planeswalkers. With 36 different characters represented, the set truly showcases an all-out war for the fate of the Multiverse being fought on Ravnica.

We wanted to do something special to commemorate this event in Japan, so we worked with Japanese artists to create alternate-art versions of every planeswalker in the set. All 36 planeswalkers in War of the Spark were reimagined beautifully by artists well-known throughout Japan, including Yoshitaka Amano!

Yoshitaka Amano has provided the art for the Legendary Planeswalker, Liliana. It's kind of giving me chills to see the original art… this is, after all, one of the artists behind the original Final Fantasy games, and the classic Speed Racer anime. Take a look:

Here's the finished card, which is, of course, in Japanese:

Luckily, these cards will be available in markets outside of Japan:

These alternate versions appear randomly in Japanese-language War of the Spark boosters, replacing the regular version of the planeswalker in the pack 50% of the time. We've made Japanese boosters available to retailers around the world, so you can find them nearby wherever you live.

These cards will also be available in Wizards Play Network promo packs during the Core Set 2020 play season, appearing in roughly 1:4 of packs. The alternate-art planeswalkers have only been printed in Japanese, but will appear in promo packs around the world.

Magic: The Gathering- War of the Spark will be released in the United States on May 3rd, 2019, with the set hitting shelves in Japan on May 5th.

The Japanese card for Chandra is amazing as well, and I really hope I can track a copy down:

But the card that's really blowing my mind is for Nissa- I just want a Magic: The Gathering anime series now. It's just too cool!
