Naughty Dog Wouldn't Have Been Able To Make Uncharted Or The Last Of Us Staying Independent

A lot of companies like to say shout about their independence, especially in entertaiment. It can be a really desirable quality, and at least plays well in an interview. It doesn't seem like its a sentiment Naughty Dog echo though, at least for themselves.

It seems that the titles that really made Naughty Dog who they are were defined by the developer's ownership by Sony. Speaking to IGN, Developer co-founder Jason Rubin said games like Uncharted and The Last of Us wouldn't have been made unless the developer sold itself to Sony.

Our relationship with Sony was already so intertwined and magical and amazing that certainty for both parties made a lot of sense. I think—my personal life decision aside—it was the right decision for Naughty Dog. Look where Naughty Dog is today. As an independent, I don't think Naughty Dog could have done that. I don't think you'd have these games.

He continued:

Most people don't realize but quite often a game is won because a game got more budget. It's bigger, badder, it's cooler because it got more budget.

I'd say that it is hard to argue this ended up working out for everyone in the end. While staying independant is great for some companies, it seems the fire power Sony gave to Naughty Dog really hit them to the stratosphere.
