"Yorvo, Lord Of Garenbrig" Deck Tech – "Magic: The Gathering"
Magic: The Gathering has been around for 26 years. It is older than many real-life issues, and even some celebrities. But do you know what is older than Magic? The Green Giant.
Yes, the Green Giant brand of canned vegetables. Those icky, slimy green beans and corn that my parents force-fed me at a very young age- Oh, wait a second…
Apparently we are going to be discussing a different green giant for this article. In fact, this is another Commander deck tech, and it features – you guessed it – a green Giant. Today, we are talking about Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig, a Legendary Creature from Throne of Eldraine.
Previously, we discussed quite a few commanders from Throne of Eldraine, including Linden, Ayara, Torbran, and the Questing Beast. Like Linden, Ayara, and Torbran, this deck revolves very heavily on creatures of a particular color – in this case, green. And like Questing Beast, Yorvo is going to rely on big, lumbering creatures in order to win the game. Unlike Questing Beast, however, Yorvo is going to be as blatant as possible in the intent. Questing Beast is a Philips-head screwdriver when solving this problem. Yorvo is a mallet.
A big mallet.
The decklist as discussed in full in this article can be found here.
Notable Inclusions
Token Production At Each Upkeep – Verdant Force, Verdant Embrace, and Tendershoot Dryad are creatures that can create more creatures every upkeep. The most important part here is that these creatures are green, meaning that Yorvo is going to grow with each Saproling that these creatures produce. Believe a former Thallid player when I say that those triggers at every single upkeep add up because they definitely do.
Green Sun's Zenith – This card will be used to grab literally any creature in the deck. For laughs, and especially if you are lacking in mana to pay the X cost, cast it for zero mana and grab a Dryad Arbor for a quick +1/+1 counter on Yorvo.
Tooth and Nail – Speaking of grabbing creatures from the deck, we have Tooth and Nail to get us two creatures into play at once. This combo seems overused but it's just really strong and as I mentioned before, blatant actions are the best ones for this deck. Go on, tutor for an Avenger of Zendikar and a Craterhoof Behemoth. If it resolves, you've clearly earned it.
Evolution Sage – We are running enough lands and permanents that utilize counters to justify this little Elf. The card is pretty self-explanatory (like most of the rest of the deck), proliferating counters on a pseudo-landfall trigger.
Doubling Season – What's better than one counter per creature? Two counters! Doubling Season will literally double your counters and tokens. That's exactly what it does. It's that simple. Need I say more?
Ghalta, Primal Hunger – Payoffs are always welcome in a deck like this. The larger the creature, the bigger Yorvo could theoretically become, and Ghalta is one of the biggest creatures this deck can produce at a remarkable discount. It's always refreshing to have a strong, trampling creature on board, especially if that creature is Ghalta.
Conclusion
I have played decks like this, but as it stands I have yet to try this out. I figure this should be a given since my schedule is so often filled writing articles about decks that I don't always have the time to play. That said, I am certain that this Magic: The Gathering deck is strong enough to make a splash in your Commander game nights.
What do you think of Yorvo? Is he formidable in this format? Let us know!
