Damon Lindelof On Watchmen Adaptation: "If You Hide Your Face, You Are Up To No Good"

Just like the divisive ending to LOST, Damon Lindelof is offering no explanation for why he would disregard the wishes of co-creator Alan Moore and make an HBO TV adaptation of Watchmen, a comic book he claims to respect. Lindelof did, however, have some comments about his upcoming show during an interview with bird-themed pop culture site Vulture.

As part of the trend to claim that any art with even a mild hint of dystopian themes is more relevant than ever in the age of Trump, Lindelof attempted to blame Trump by claiming it's important to make "dangerous" TV shows during "dangerous" times.

"Watchmen — it was dangerous," said Lindelof. "And you can't be dangerous for dangerous's sake, but the reason that I'm doing this is these are dangerous times, and we need dangerous shows."

Lindelof went on to present the revolutionary (for the 1980s) idea that everything we know about superheroes is wrong.

"What we think about superheroes is wrong," he explained. "I love the Marvel movies and we saw Justice League this morning and I'm all for Wonder Woman and Batman and I grew up on these characters, but we should not trust people who put on masks and say that they are looking out for us. If you hide your face, you are up to no good."

We're not sure that's the simplistic take on Watchmen that the world deserves, but apparently Damon Lindelof thinks it's the one we need right now. Alan Moore would surely disagree.

What about you?
