Could The Sequel To X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: Supernova, Be A Simon Kinberg Vanity Project?

laststand

We've know for some time that a New Mutants movie would be filming this summer, so when rumors began to circulate that a second X-Men film would also be in development at the same time, it seemed a bit unbelievable. Even still, the film known as X-Men: Supernova has continued to gather momentum in the rumor market, with reports that it will redo the Dark Phoenix Saga, and even a confirmation from Sophie Turner that she is indeed still employed. Now, a new report from atom themed pop culture site Collider finally makes the whole thing make sense: it's a vanity project for series producer Simon Kinberg.

According to Collider, Kinberg wants to use X-Men: Supernova to make his directorial debut, having already written a script. Even if the rumor is true, it will require Fox to agree to use Kinberg's script and let him direct, and plans could always change by the time production begins, but Kinberg was already spotted at dinner with star James McAvoy, perhaps firming up alliances for this power play. Kinberg was the writer of both X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Days of Future Past, but it's worth noting that he was also the writer of Josh Trank's Fantastic Four and X-Men: The Last Stand. Perhaps it's that last, widely reviled film, which also drew on the Dark Phoenix Saga for its storyline, that drives Kinberg to want to write and direct X-Men: Supernova in an attempt to atone for his sins.

He's got his work cut out for him. We'll let you know when some concrete information about this so-called film becomes available.
