ESPN has been the primary home for the Spelling Bee since 1994. ● Though the term "spelling bee" has been a popular one for decades, no one is quite sure where it first came from – even Scripps: "The word 'bee,' as used in 'spelling bee,' is one of those language puzzles that has never been satisfactorily[...]

Since there's over 500 spellers in this year's competition, there's no way Bleeding Cool could list every single contestant here (for that, check out the main website). Thanks to our random-number-generating friends over at Random.org, here's a look at some of this year's contestants.

From there, winners advance to local levels usually sponsored by newspapers, community organizations and universities; with those local winners travelling to Washington, D.C., to compete in the National Finals.
