Superman: DC Studios' Peter Safran on Why Film Won't Be at SDCC 2024

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran explained why writer/director James Gunn's Superman won't have a panel or presentation during SDCC 2024.

Earlier this week, Superman writer/director James Gunn confirmed that Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor) had wrapped filming on David Corenswet (Superman/Clark Kent) and Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane)-starring film and that they "only have a few days left of shooting." Of course, with this being San Diego Comic-Con 2024 (SDCC 2024) weekend, fans have been wondering if they will be getting any news about the film or any of the other projects that DC Studios co-CEOs Gunn and Peter Safran have in play. While there have been rumblings that some news might be made sometime over the next three days, Safran is sharing why Superman isn't having a big presence during this year's pop culture extravaganza.

"From my perspective, it's just too soon," Safran shared with The Wrap, a valid point considering the film won't hit theaters until July 2025. "A year is truthfully a long time for a campaign, and so, from our perspective, I think we go stronger and harder over a shorter period rather than stretching it out. That's our instinct on that." With The Man of Steel being DC Studios' first official big-screen offering, Safran emphasizes the importance of them taking their time and getting things right.

"James hasn't wrapped yet. I think when you put your first foot forward, for us, for our first theatrical live-action experience, there's a lot of expectation on that. And we really have to make sure we deliver every step of the way, but certainly with the first time out. So that's why we opted not to be there," Safran explained. But that doesn't mean there won't be more than enough of the Man of Steel to go around before the marketing drive really gets into gear (like CW's Superman & Lois returning in the fall for its fourth and final season). "Believe me, there's gonna be no shortage of Superman in your life over the next 12 months," he teased.

Superman: A Look Back at The Journey So Far…

"Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman's birthday," Gunn wrote as the caption to his post presenting the famous "S" on his Superman's costume, before confirming the change in the film's title. "When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025."

Here's a look back at a screencap of Gunn's Threads post sharing a group shot of the cast (and with Nicholas Hoult definitely in Lex Luthor mode) from the table read:

"After the table read with the #Superman cast. Eve, Mr. Terrific, Superman/Clark, Otis, Lex, producer Peter Safran, Jimmy, Metamorpho, Lois, Hawkgirl, me, Guy, The Engineer all together for the first time! What a wonderful day." Gunn wrote as the caption to his Instagram post showing off the team:

#Cleveland – today we are leaving you after six amazing weeks of shooting," Gunn wrote to kick off the caption to the image gallery he shared in mid-July of the team's experiences filming in the city. "From the moment we first came here on a scout a tad less than a year ago and Terminal Tower was lit up with the colors of Superman, I knew you were a special place. I would walk down your streets and someone would stop me and tell me how grateful they were we were shooting in their city – not once, not twice, but dozens of times. The wonderful background actors on the film were always so fun and funny and they clapped after takes, something that reminded us Hollywood cynics why we make movies in the first place."

Gunn continued, "The pride you feel in being where Jerry and Joe first created Superman was invigorating. You exemplify his spirit. But just as much it's the pride you have in your community, your hometown, your radio stations and restaurants and gathering places that touched me. Every city would be so lucky to have people that loved their city as much as you. You simply couldn't have been more wonderful, kind, or accommodating to me and our performers and crew. Thank you a thousand times over for being our friends and partners on this film. Much love to you all.🙏🧜‍♂️❤️" Here's a look at Gunn's original post:

The Announcement…

Here's a look back at Gunn's tweet from March 2023 making the announcement that he would be writing and directing Superman: Legacy, followed by the full, heartfelt text of the message he shared while confirming what's been rumbling around social media since the previous week:

"Yes, I'm directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, 'Dude, it's Dad's birthday.' I hadn't realized," Gunn wrote in the opening to his series of tweets announcing the news. "I lost my Dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn't understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film, and I wouldn't be making this movie now without him. It has been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago – I initially said no because I didn't have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved. Then a bit less than a year ago, I saw a way in, in many ways, centering around Superman's heritage – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes."

DC Studios' Superman stars David Corenswet (Hollywood) as Superman/Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane. In addition, the Superman: Legacy cast includes Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult (The Great) as Lex Luthor, Wendell Pierce (HBO's The Wire) as Perry White, Isabela Merced (Sicario: Day of the Soldado) as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/The Engineer, Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord, Pruitt Taylor Vince (Murder One, Lady in the Lake) as Jonathan Kent/"Pa Kent," Neva Howell (Ghosts of the Ozarks) as Martha Kent/"Ma Kent," Beck Bennett (Saturday Night Live) as Daily Planet sports editor Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad) as Daily Planet gossip columnist Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as skilled Daily Planet reporter Ron Troupe – with Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. (from Creature Commandos and Peacemaker Season 2) set to appear. Composer John Murphy (28 Days Later, Sunshine, Kick-Ass, The Suicide Squad, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3) will score the film.
