October Faction Supernatural Dreams #2 Review: Surprisingly Dull Demon-Hunting
A goat-headed man enters the town of Gristlewood and immediately begins using supernatural powers to wreak havoc throughout the town. Vivian and Geoff arrive on the scene to stop him, and he easily dispatches them both. They return to their house, and Vivian is laid up to recover from her wounds. The whole Alan Family prepares itself for the next encounter.
October Faction: Supernatural Dreams #2 is a disappointingly thin comic book. It's light on story, light on characterization, and light on personality.
Much of the comic is the goat-headed demon man destroying the town and spouting generically evil dialogue which seems like its aiming for humor but doesn't quite reach the comedic mark. The fight between the Allan siblings and the demon is slightly interesting, but it's over too soon.
The aftermath in the Allan mansion has very generic dialogue too. It's all making plans, talking about the threat, and little more. The dialogue tends towards dull and at-times clunky dialogue. No line stands out or even approaches the same ballpark as memorable. It's just exposition and failed one-liners.
The biggest crime of Supernatural Dreams #2 is the lack of personality. Nothing about this comic stands out, and it should. This is a family of sorcerers who fight supernatural evil with a surname and house noticeably similar to The Addams Family. Shouldn't the comic be livelier than this?
Damien Worm's artwork is by far the best part of the comic, and it is the closest the comic comes to having a distinct personality and identity. Even if the villain has a very conventional design, his movements and gestures are distinct. The world looks delightfully grim, and the color work is outright gorgeous.
October Faction: Supernatural Dreams #2 is a very underwhelming magic-wielding and demon-hunting comic. The story is thin, the characters are bland, and the art is the only thing that gives the comic an identity. I can't recommend this one. Give it a pass.
