"A Knight's Quest" is a Classic "Zelda" Style RPG

Curve Digital and Sky9 Games are bringing A Knight's Quest: Spirit Shield to Steam, PS4, and Xbox One in the near future. The game was initially announced in 2015 by Sky9 and has since been picked up by publisher Curve Digital, and optimized for all three platforms. The game is billed as an action-adventure-RPG in the style of Zelda and Metroid. Which, based on our hands-on demo of the game at the ID@Xbox Showcase just before PAX West, holds true.

The game description by Sky9 reads:

An ancient evil, a bold yet clumsy hero, a grand adventure, and a quest… with knights.

A Knight's Quest is an action-adventure-RPG inspired by The Legend of Zelda and Metroid with an emphasis on humor, exploration, and combat. Over the course of the adventure you will discover new items and abilities that change the way you interact with the world, upgrade skills and weapons to suit your play-style. A Knight's Quest is all about having a fun, light-hearted adventure and a worthy challenge.

Going hands-on with the game through the opening level, its obvious that the Zelda and Metroid influences hold. The opening to the game was a bit linear, however, the obvious RPG elements were still in play. The sense of adventure and comedy were immediately conveyed by the character dialogue between the two main characters, and you even got a little bit of supernatural danger.

Jumping into a fight later in the game, I got to test out three different weapons, their related skills, and take on a late-game boss. Which was a difficult trial, but I managed to get through with only a few dev cheats like the ability to revive once. Which, I do admit, I needed to use. However, the boss mechanics were fun and varied throughout the different phases of the fight. All in all, A Knight's Tale was a fun and enjoyable game. It isn't groundbreaking, as it is far too much a nostalgia game for that, but the sheer fun of the game makes that a non-issue.

According to Curve Digital, the game is still "coming soon."
