Astro Gaming Was Acquired By Logitech But Will Still Make Peripherals
Yesterday, Logitech announced that it has acquired Astro Gaming and Astro will be joining the Logitech G gaming team. Logitech has earned a reputation for its focus on PC, tablets and phone peripherals, but acquiring Astro Gaming allows the company to add console accessories to its products as Astro Gaming has made a name for itself in the console and eSports space for its quality headsets and gear. This $85 million cash acquisition makes Logitech a large player in the gaming peripheral industry, which not only widens its scope to the console gaming market, it also changes the console gaming periphery market quite a bit.
In a blog post, Logitech vice president and general manager Ujesh Desai makes it clear that there are no plans to discontinue Astro Gaming's products. "With Astro laser-focused on designing products for console gaming, and Logitech G focused on building the most advanced PC gaming gear, together we've got gamers covered no matter what platform they play on," he wrote. So, we're likely to see Logitech improve upon Astro's current slate of products rather than reduce it, which should be fantastic news for all gamers.
The acquisition should be complete by early August.
Logitech taking over Astro Gaming now means that there's a large, top contender for third party gaming peripherals, and Logitech is known for their sensible prices, which means they could start to put a decent dent in the first party accessories field. We all know Sony and Microsoft overcharge for first party gaming peripherals, but there was never any major player there to challenge them. And now there will be.
