"Gadwick, the Wizened" Deck Tech – "Magic: The Gathering"

Throughout the ages, there have been reports of magically-inclined human beings practicing their craft to the shock, awe, and also the rage of other less-magical people. These wizards, witches, warlocks, and so forth all purportedly existed in the medieval environment and had woven themselves into the very fabric of legend. The greatest legendary medieval wizard, Merlin, has become a trope within fantasy, inspiring characters like Gandalf the White (nee the Grey), Albus Dumbledore, and others. One could say that the Merlin trope is quintessential to any good fantasy story, even those that are told through the medium of trading cards.

Today for my Magic: The Gathering Commander deck tech, I want to cover a commander who embodies the Merlin trope to a T: Gadwick, the Wizened.

Gadwick the Wizened is a legendary creature that can draw a bunch of cards for you when he enters the battlefield, and whenever you cast a blue spell, he taps down an opposing creature for you. This deck will seek to capitalize on this, but also will aim to use the sort of Wizard-tribal package that one would normally see in an Azami, Lady of Scrolls build.

Notable Inclusions

Azami, Lady of Scrolls – The librarian herself, Azami is a mainstay in any Wizard tribal deck. With the ability to turn every Wizard you control into card advantage each turn, Azami is a disgustingly amazing half-of-a-combo which I'll discuss the rest of in a moment.

Mind Over Matter – And… that moment is now. Mind Over Matter plus Azami makes for a fully-drawn deck, and thus the capability to win through a Laboratory Maniac or Jace, Wielder of Mysteries. Simply discard a card and untap any Wizard you'd like to untap, then tap the Wizard, as you've been doing, with Azami. Repeat ad absurdum and if you need to, counter the stifle that's gunning for your Lab Maniac's triggered ability.

The Wizard Package – In this deck, there's a major Wizard tribal theme, as you've probably discerned already. Cards like Galecaster Colossus and Vedalken AEthermage see play in here in order to tighten the tribal theme. Galecaster Colossus can act as a mini-Capsize with its repeatable bounce effects, and Vedalken AEthermage can, effectively, be whatever kind of Wizard you'd like to have drawn in its stead (in short, it's a tutor effect. Nice!).

There are plenty of other tribal interactions with the Wizards creature type. You'll have to play with the deck to figure them all out as there are probably too many to list.

In Conclusion

I'm not the most competent player to use blue, as, like with white, I usually use it in conjunction with other colors. However, I can attest to the strength of any given Azami deck, and this is probably the next best thing, to be frank about it. Try it out and let us know how it handles?
