Square Enix Announces a Slew of Final Fantasy Console Releases

Square Enix announced that a slew of titles from it's immense Final Fantasy series are coming to the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and even Steam. The majority of the releases are going to hit the Switch, as announced in tonight's Nintendo Direct, but the Xbox One and PS4 are also getting some pretty major releases.

The idea behind the massive batch of ports is to allow fans to be able to play hallmark Final Fantasy games "anytime and anywhere." Which means making them available on as many platforms as possible.

The Final Fantasy fun starts with today's release of Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD on the Nintendo Switch, and will be followed up with the release of World of Final Fantasy Maxima on November 6th, 2018 on Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and Steam. Additionally, the Chocobo's Dungeon series is also returning with a new addition set for release this winter. Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon Every Buddy! will be the first Chocobo's Dungeon game in ten years.

The other titles, including Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered, will launch in 2019.

The full list of the announced Final Fantasy titles and platforms are available below:

  • Final Fantasy IX
  • Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster

  • World of Final Fantasy Maxima

Xbox One

While it is nice to see Square Enix bringing more Final Fantasy games to all platforms, the fact that the PS4, Xbox One, and Switch will only have access to FF VIIFF IXFF XFF X-2, and FF XII as remasters is a bit saddening. While most gamers and critics view the odd numbered Final Fantasy games as better than their even numbered counterparts, FF VI is a major exception to that rule, and I myself am pretty fond of FF VIII even though it's second half is a bit flat. PC players have access to Final Fantasy III and forward. Which begs the question: why not port every major game in the series to all available platforms? Sure, that's quite a bit of coding work, but I know quite a few gamers who would love to revisit the older games in the series in a portable format.

Still, this is a good start toward that goal, and I'm never going to be upset with having some of my favorite Square Enix titles available on every current-gen platform.
