Arkham Knight Director Explains The Role Of The Batmobile In The Game

14345860051A lot has been made of the Batmobile in Batman: Arkham Knight. Lots of people dislike the mode of transportation, feeling it is needless, overly used and betrays the traversal the series was previously famous for. As I said in my review, I actually think it is pretty cool, but it more or less falls apart when it goes into Battle Mode and turns into a tank.

On that note, director on the game, Sefton Hill, talked to Edge Magazine (via GamesRadar) about the creation of the Batmobile and why it was included in the game. He also goes into where Battle Mode comes from and how that became a part of the vehicle.

We definitely came with a lot of ideas, and worked on it with Adam Doherty, who's the player code director. But fundamentally, we didn't want [the Batmobile] to feel a separate entity to Batman; we wanted it to feel like the ultimate Batman gadget. That was really the focus of that we wanted. We never planned for there to be discrete driving levels and then you never get the car again – we were only going to do it if it was something that was totally inherent to the design right from day one

I can't say we started off with the way Battle Mode works; [it's] completely different to Pursuit mode. We knew we wanted in those areas in the game, but the way that's controlled, that's something we iterated on over time. Saying that, we always have a rule that if it's not good enough, it doesn't stay in the game.

I understand where they are coming from, but as far as the Batmobile being integral to design…besides making you do a lot of missions in it, I can't say I'm sold. It's not bad, but it certainly does feel like a separate entity for sure.
