Last night the second episode of Lucifer aired, Lucifer, Stay. Good Devil. I was somewhat critical of the pilot, heaping praise on Tom Ellis but calling the rest of the cast one-dimensional. But pilots are notoriously bad having to focus on setting up the series over character building. I was looking forward to episode two to see just how the writers would expand on what they started.

Ellis turned it up a notch in episode two. His Lucifer Morningstar is funny, uninhibited and worth turning in for each week. Whether its his smoking evidence at a crime scene, describing sexual acts, causing paparazzi to turn on each other or even throwing a doll to get a child to play fetch… the character just demands your attention.

Detective Chloe Dancer improves with this episode. Lauren German gives her b-movie actress turned cop character more depth and some better moments playing off the insanity of Lucifer. But there is still room to improve here. She is curious about the man who calls himself the devil, wants to understand how he does what he does… but allows him to cross the line too much to be plausible. It's necessary for the show but doesn't sit well with her character.

Not much changes with the supporting cast other than the douchey ex-husband is a tad less douchey this week. Their daughter gets a couple good moments and we are starting to see what role the psychiatrist will play in all this. But both Mazikeen and Amenadiel are both just flat.

The mystery they are dealing with is weak and predictable overall. A few nice twist in that it ties into Dancer's past and helps with her character growth… but the fact they've worked on two cases now, each tying to one of their personal lives makes you wonder how the series will progress without the emotional tie each week.

It seems like the writers of the series love the character of Lucifer and want to showcase him… and with how Ellis is portraying the character, this is a good call. But the character is trying to be fit into a c-grade police procedural. The reason Castle worked and Forever should have worked was the crimes themselves were interesting, a balancing factor. But here there is little to no police work, it's all them figuring out who to talk to then Lucifer making them talk.

With a 1.9 rating and 6 million viewers, the show is going to get a while to find its footing. If whatever is brewing between Lucifer and Amenadiel isn't extremely interesting to viewers, and the procedural side of the show doesn't pick up… then I'd expect those ratings to start to drop or perhaps a retooling.

Here's what is in store for episode 3:
