The PlayStation 4 Has Sold 18.5 Million Consoles

In November, the Xbox One was the leading console for the first time in the new generation's cycle. Before that, the PlayStation 4 reigned unchallenged for nearly 12 months as the console has been hot property since it's release in November 2013. There were concerns the console market was dying before both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One hit store shelves, but that has proven ludicrously false as it's become the quickest selling generation ever.

We have an updated total to point to now as well. A Japanese press release from Sony, via Gematsu, revealed that the console has sold over 18.5 Million units. It also pointed out that 4.1 million of those are from the holiday season just past. Those are huge numbers. Like, 'fastest selling console ever' numbers.

The PlayStation 4 really is cementing itself as the most successful console in the history of gaming. Honestly, I find that quite surprising. I think it 's an elegant console, but it's still missing that "killer app". The Xbox One has more compelling exclusives I think. That won't be too big of a concern when BloodBourne, Street Fighter and Uncharted 4 hit soon though. The total will no doubt be monstrous by then.
