Baron Corbin Main Event Results in Viewership Gain for WWE Smackdown

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Baron Corbin equals ratings. On a night when WWE heavily focused on The Ratings King of Friday Nights, Smackdown rose in viewership even though half of the episode was filled with a bunch of reruns of old Undertaker matches. Smackdown tied for first place for the night in ratings with Shark Tank and 20/20 on ABC, and hopefully, WWE was paying attention to exactly who it is that draws eyes to the program.

The Numbers Don't Lie: Smackdown Is Up Because of Baron Corbin

Showbuzz Daily's numbers are out, and Smackdown once again scored a .5 in the 18-49 demographic, same as last week. But the real story is in the viewership, where Smackdown drew 2.271 million viewers for the first hour. It featured Baron Corbin cutting a vicious promo on The Undertaker, who wasn't even there and 2.076 million viewers for the second hour, which saw Corbin face Jeff Hardy in the main event. That's an average of 2.174 million viewers, a massive increase from last week when an average of just 2.065 million people tuned in.

The Bottom Line 'Cause Chad Said So

WWE has to be happy with those numbers, and I really hope they're paying attention. I know that the Undertaker is supposedly retired after The Last Ride documentary. Still, I think it's pretty obvious, based on the ratings last night, that there's big money in a feud between The Undertaker and Baron Corbin. If King Corbin just cutting a promo on The Undertaker when Undertaker isn't even there can cause more than a hundred thousand more people than normal to tune into Smackdown. Imagine if Corbin main-evented WrestleMania with The Undertaker and retired the Dead Man to close out the show? It could be the start of another pro wrestling boom period, with King Corbin leading the way. I'd like to see that happen. What about you?
