Justice League To Be Lighter Take On Murderous Heroes, Says Producer
DC movie mogul Charles Roven, who worked on the Dark Knight Trilogy, Man Of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad, and who will be the producer of both Wonder Woman and Justice League, gave an in depth (read: boring – except for the Richard Pryor story) interview to the Hollywood Reporter today, and Bleeding Cool drank several cups of coffee to pore through it looking for tidbits of sensational superhero movie news. And boy did we find it! According to Roven, when it comes to Justice League, Warner Bros has had enough of the the grimdark, neck-snapping tone of their past superhero efforts:
We knew we were making a very serious, compelling, driving film with Batman v. Superman. Now the bell has been rung and the whole tone of the movie is lighter.
Roven also called Superman v. Batman (which underperformed) and Suicide Squad (which overperformed) "huge hits," answering a question about whether sequels might see budget cuts. Responding to past reports that he would step away from producing DC movies, Roven said that while he can't handle all the movies on the DC slate, he will "for sure produce the sequels to the one's he's made." On Wonder Woman, Roven said:
Wonder Woman is an origination story, so the whole dynamic and the plot moves are different than other DC movies. There's also a great relationship between her and the guy [played by Chris Pine] who crash-lands on her island and is the trigger mechanism for her going back to man's world.
A lighter superhero movie? A movie with a female protagonist that focuses strongly on a romantic relationship with a man? Truly, Charles Roven and Warner Bros are looking to shake up the movie industry! Justice League hits theaters in November, 2017. Wonder Woman comes out first, in June.
