Daredevil #603 Review: Slower but Still Full of Personality
Daredevil finds Elektra attempting to leave New York, and the two are ambushed by the Hand. After the ninjas mysteriously withdraw, Matt convinces Elektra to stay in the city and join his fight against the Hand. After returning to city hall, Matt throws an even crazier idea at Foggy, and it involves the crime lords the heroes of the city recently put away.
Daredevil #603 shows the stretch marks of this story more than any of the recent issues. The story has turned a crisis into a borderline Escape-from-New York-but-with-ninjas situation.
However, that doesn't doom the issue, and it still has its charms. I'm not an Elektra fan myself, but she could play a good role in this story. Matt's plan for the villains will likely turn out highly entertaining. Everything seems to be building to an all-out war between New York and the occupying force of Hand ninjas. That could be awesome.
It's not throwing anymore particularly unique or surprising ideas in this issue, but it's still loaded with personality. This is the cocky mayor Matt Murdock we are dealing with here, Blindspot's role still seems mysterious and mercurial, and Foggy is still one lovable beleaguered support character.
Mike Henderson adds a lot of visual personality to the comic too. His style makes for cool action beats, creepy villains, and a constantly smirking Matt Murdock. The comic book-y aesthetic fits Daredevil well, and it's supported by a starkly contrasting color palette from Matt Milla.
Daredevil #603 is a fairly slow issue without some of the edges recent issues of the series have had, but it is still a fairly enjoyable comic. Charles Soule has made this run of the series his own and remade it a few times since then, and it's been a while since an issue has underperformed. This one doesn't break that streak, and I can recommend it as a result. Pick it up.
