"Throne of Eldraine" Is A Fairytale Fantasy – "Magic: The Gathering"
Magic: The Gathering's 82nd expansion set, Throne of Eldraine, has a plentitude of fantasy tropes, making it one of the biggest, most ambitious crossovers in childhood fairytale history (Dreamworks' movie Shrek also coming to mind).
While Throne of Eldraine is chock-full of Arthurian and Grimm tropes alike, between the two it's obvious that unless the references aren't completely lost on you the latter tropes prevail over the former. Let's look at what this means for new cards in the set.
For one, many of the Grimm-style cards tell a story over multiple cards. For example, the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk" is shown through Giant Killer, Beanstalk Giant – and even Bonecrusher Giant references it a bit ("I'll grind your bones to make my bread!" is one of those iconic lines from the classic tale).
Additionally, we see classic tales like "Snow White" get a new treatment through the cards in the set. We get cards like Seven Dwarves (which you can have seven of!), Glass Casket, Charming Prince (who technically is in many different stories, but what can one do?), and a very prominent reference in The Magic Mirror itself.
One other important piece that is fitting enough for this world and set is the story of "The Three Little Pigs". The pigs are pretty unfortunate to be dealing with a Wicked Wolf, who has threatened to Blow [their] House Down, and even have themselves represented as nothing more than a Wolf's Quarry.
There are absolutely many, many more fairy tales displayed in this set, from "Cinderella" to "The Gingerbread Man", and even Robin Hood and the Pied Piper of Hamelin have some relevant tropes featured in this set. So get out of our swamp, Shrek – there's another storybook crossover in town, and this one clearly has it in the cards.
Throne of Eldraine releases for tabletop Magic on October 4th, 2019. Prerelease events are September 27th-29th, and Magic: The Gathering: Arena will see the set launch on September 26th.
