So When Theaters Reopen, Are You Going To Go?

Theaters are closed all over the world, 95% to be exact. No big films are hitting screens again until July. Big release films are screening in our homes as we speak. Things have never looked worse for the theatrical exhibition business. Not even World Wars or The Great Depression shuttered the film industry like this situation has. There are plans in place to reopen theaters on July 1st, but that seems like a long way off still. The bigger question is this: when they DO reopen, will you go back? Will you feel safe doing so, or will you feel too distracted to focus on the film you are there to see?

What Would it Take to Get You To Return to a Theater?

On social media, there seems to be a split. Many people feel that there is no safe way to go to the movies after all this. It would be hard to practice safe social distancing in a giant room with a couple of hundred people sitting right on top of each other so that they may be right. What if they halved that number, though. What if only every third seat was sold? Would you be willing to sit away from the people you came with? What about concessions, the lifeblood of the theater business. I don't think it is a secret anymore that the theaters really don't make a ton on the ticket sales, but the food sales are their big moneymaker. Do you want a couple of other people handling the food you may buy? Think about the theater you go to regularly. Do they do a good enough job cleaning between screenings? DO they clean the seats? Locally, the local chain here where I am does, but I know the national chain doesn't. Does that mean I never go there again? Unfortunately, these are the questions people are asking themselves.

An Experience Unlike Any Other in Entertainment

I, for one, will go back. There is nothing like being in the theater with a bunch of people and experiencing a film together. Think about the first time you saw Avengers and the famous circle shot of the team, or the emotional outburst people felt watching Diana cross No Man's Land in Wonder Woman. We cannot, and should not lose that. I do think the days of mid-budget filmgoing is in huge trouble. Indie films, comedies, and dramas are facing an uphill battle for screens now. I think people will end up going back, but only for the event-type movies: your MCU's, your Disney's, your Fast & Furious's.

What say you though? When theaters come back, are you? If you are on the fence, why? What could theaters do to get you back?
