iZombie Season 4: A Look Back at Season 3 (The Weekly Static: Extras!)

izombie season 4 season 3 recap

In this third chapter of Margo Staten's three-season iZombie recap (make sure to read her thoughts on Season 1 and Season 2; as well as her look ahead to Season 4), she gets us up-to-speed on Season 3 ahead of tonight's fourth season premiere:

"In this house we eat whole brains and we solve murder" – Olivia "Liv" Moore

Originally published by DC Comics' Vertigo imprint in 2010, the CW's adaptation of Chris Roberson and Michael Allred's comic book series iZombie debuted its third season on April 4th, 2017. Now as big a fan as I am of the series, I have to admit that season 3 left me confused, a little disappointed and needing more episodes.

This season didn't hold the same charm or easy-going laughter from previous seasons; and quite frankly, I also didn't get nearly enough of the funny brain food moments that were so abundant in the first two seasons. Season 3 had a much darker tone and took me on an emotional rollercoaster that the shorter season didn't give me enough time to process. I'm not saying that the season lacked action and excitement; in fact, quite the contrary: more zombies, bigger body count, and we got to break bread with an underground group of locals whose goal is to basically expose and kill zombies. Do I need mention that their "mortality" doesn't last very long?

"I think what they're doing here is smart, I mean do we really believe there's gonna be a 'let's talk things out' with the zombies" – Major Lilywhite, to Liv and Clive Babineaux

Centering around population zombie, exposure and preparation for Discover Day (D-Day), the season opens with Fillmore-Graves Enterprises (a private military firm) CEO Vivian Stall (Andrea Savage) informing Major Lilywhite (Robert Buckley), Olivia "Liv" Moore (Rose McIver) and Detective Clive Babineaux (Malcolm Goodwin) that there are quite a few more zombies living in Seattle than they thought: and that to be more specific, Fillmore-Graves is made up entirely of zombie staff.

Great luck for Major because this means some stable employment — but it's pretty odd that no one at "zombie headquarters" cares that he was arrested for being the "Chaos Killer" back in season 2. Shockingly, Vivian is killed in an airplane explosion (another example of big things happening with little time to process) and her brother-in-law Chase Graves (Jason Dohring) a no nonsense military type takes over.

We are also introduced to Bo Johns (James Pizzinato) and Harley Johns (Andre Caldwell), brothers and conspiracy theorists dead-set on proving to Seattle that zombies do exist — and they're getting close. Ravi Chakrabarti (Rahul Kohli) infiltrates their secret meeting and discovers their plans; but the group's success is short-lived when Liv and Blaine DeBeers (David Anders) storm the place in full-on zombie mode and take out their entire brigade. No better way to end the night than a little evening-feasting on Bo Harley's brains — "straight out of the can," so to speak. Tripping on conspiracy brain and landing on the front page of a newspaper, Liv goes into incognito mode and changes her look. Yeah. Not loving it.

Some additional highlights worth noting include:

●  Blaine faking amnesia after taking the cure to turn him human again (lies, lies, and more lies!), although this does bring him closer to Peyton Charles (Aly Michalka).

●  Major is human again! Have to say, its getting hard keeping up with his seemingly daily on again/off again zombie persona.

●  Liv has a new love interest in Justin Bell (Tongavi Chirisa) a soldier for Fillmore-Graves; though that relationship pretty much goes south after Liv sleeps with Chase while under the influence of "promiscuous brain."

●  Ravi creates what he thinks is the cure and asks Liv to turn him into a zombie for the ultimate test subject.

"Send us your brains and everything will be okay." – Chase Graves

Season 3 also introduced us to new zombie mayor Floyd Baracus (Kurt Evans); whose position conveniently helps set the stage for the zombie take over, so cue Chase being forced by Carrie Gold (Anjali Jay) to put D-Day into play. Now a deceased former employee of Filmore-Graves, Carrie went rogue and used a dog to spread the Aleution Flu virus; which when contracted brings about a very slow and painful death.

In the wake of the Aleutian flu outbreak, the citizens of Seattle storm local medical centers in a desperate search for the flu vaccine. Except there's a problem — a huge problem: zombies have infiltrated the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the flue vaccine now contains the zombie virus. Like a wave, the zombie virus spreads throughout the city — including Detective Babineaux's ex-girlfriend Dale Bozzio (Jessica Harman). And to think those two were on the verge of getting back together…

Liv barges into the local news station and forces news anchor (and local pain in the ass) Johnny Frost (Daran Norris) to broadcast an announcement urging Seattle to stop taking the flu vaccine. Chase goes on-air to confirm that zombies do exist, but they have no intention of feasting on the human population and wish simply to live and coexist.

Simple enough, right? Except there's a catch: the "only thing" Chase is asking for in return is for the living to donate their brains to keep the zombies happy and fully fed. If his little request (which sounded a lot more like a demand) is denied, then things might get ugly. "Ugly" in a "zombie war throughout the streets of Seattle" kind of way, just so there's no misunderstandings.

Having the Seattle population infected with the virus compliments of Chase was a big way to end the season. So what's ahead for Season 4? Will zombies and humans learn to co-exist? My two-word take on it? Fat Chance.

I'm thinking more of a The Walking Dead status: outright chaos and anarchy. My prediction: more brains for Liv; a higher body count, both human and undead; and an even darker tone. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing what a zombie Ravi is like, and I fear how Chase will react when/if a zombie cure is found.

Once again, it's that time when we pay homage to the many personality-inducing brain feasts Liv had this season:

• Sloppy Joe/Chili Dogs and enthusiastic, supportive father brains

• Chicken Hot Pot and gossip queen brains

• Fried chicken and dominatrix brains

• Spaghetti with beef and vegetables and hot mess brains

• PB&J and can't keep it in her pants teacher brains

• Fried brains and daredevil brains

• Raw, fresh out of the skull, no salt needed conspiracy theorist brains

• Cake and promiscuous brains.

iZombie returns to the CW for its fourth season premiere on Monday, February 26th at 9 p.m. ET.
