OPINION: "Mystery Boosters" Are (Usually) Great – "Magic: The Gathering"

Hey there, fans of Magic: The Gathering in all its various shapes and forms! Today, I'd like to talk for a moment about the "Mystery Booster" phenomenon, and how it's generally a boon, but at times can be a bust.

So, by now, if you play Magic: The Gathering to such a degree that you do research on the web for the sake of making your game into an A-game, you may have found a number of people recently bragging about the packs they opened of the "Mystery Booster" product that Wizards of the Coast put out on March 13th. To such an extent, things like the following have very much occurred:

(If the above video doesn't load at twelve minutes and eighteen seconds, the gist is that someone opened two copies of Mana Crypt – and much more – in their pack. How about them apples?)

In the very same YouTuber's channel, not even two days prior, he opened a box (for one of his Patreons subscribers) that contained some value – including two copies of Demonic Tutor (in the black common/uncommon slot, which is awesome to be honest!) – but no really valuable cards. The truth of the matter is this, however: That patron got back his investment in cardstock. That itself is pretty great, but it's likely that that person wanted a Mana Crypt for themselves.

Now, I'm not going to go about saying that Wizards should take that as a hint to print "Secret Lair: Mana Crypt times X, where X is the number of Commander decks you own" – that'd be utterly ludicrous and an outrageous demand of me, a common journalist, to make.

Unless Wizards wants to, in which case I'd love a promotional copy for myself and my five decks. Five isn't too many Commander decks for one journalist to have, right? Right?

I am digressing heavily, however. The long and short of it is that you, as a smart consumer, should absolutely be picking up Mystery Booster cards – if you need a copy or five of a card that was previously prohibitively expensive, now's your chance to grab it before the price goes back up (and I mean now). If you want to grab packs, grab a box and draft it with friends or family (but please, with COVID-19 looming, be safe about this!). And if you want to support your local gaming store, buy it from there as opposed to, say, an online source (I know I admit I'm a hypocrite for not doing this but I was so impatient! I'm now paying the price because I have to wait a few more days for it to ship). Either way, go do yourself a favor and pick up at least some part of this amazing set experience.
