Bethesda Softworks is an American video game publisher based in Maryland. The company was founded by Christopher Weaver in 1986 and became a subsidiary of ZeniMax Media in 1999 when Weaver and Robert A. Altman created the parent company for Bethesda Softworks. Then, in 2001 Bethesda split its internal development team into a separate entity which became Bethesda Game Studios.
Bethesda Softworks publishes games by Bethesda Game Studios, ZeniMax Online Studios, id Software, Arkane Studios, MachineGames, and Tango Gameworks. Some of Bethesda's best known game series include The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Rage, Dishonored, Doom, Wolfenstein, and The Evil Within.
Bethesda is also credited with the creation of the first physics-based sports simulator, Gridiron! which released in 1986 for the Commodore Amiga, Commodore 64/128, and Atari ST.
