Batman #44 Review: Catwoman Goes Dress Shopping
Catwoman sneaks out while Bruce is asleep to go wedding dress shopping as only Selina Kyle can. While she does this, we are given snapshots at various points of she and Bruce's relationship over the years.
Tom King delivers another fun one-off issue, this time focusing on Catwoman doing her own flavor of wedding preparation.
It's a brief read; the only dialogue is in the flashbacks. Even then, it's light. It attempts to play off the differences and similarities of Catwoman and Batman over time. It's nice seeing some of the classic Catwoman costumes which haven't surfaced in forever.
The simplicity of the comic is one of its strongest qualities, and the entire scenario is undeniably Catwoman — as is the dress she chooses.
As a fanboy who has been adoring King's rendition of this couple, it does worry me that this issue is foreshadowing a schism between Bruce and Selina. Batman has a bit of a strict policy regarding crime, and one would expect him to take issue with Catwoman's actions in this comic. Plus, this comic highlights a lot of their ups and downs as well as focusing on what's changed and remained the same about each character over time. I'm not saying this engagement is going to fall apart; I'm only saying that this comic could be foreshadowing it. I hope it doesn't happen though.
Joelle Jones and Mikel Janin split this comic, with Jones handling the scenes in the present and Janin taking the flashbacks. Their styles meld well, and each artist is a tested talent. Both halves look quite gorgeous, and June Chung and Jordie Bellaire nail it in the color art section.
Batman #44 is a charming tale of wedding dress shopping. A good writer can make just about anything compelling, and King proves that here. The artistic team show they are now slouches either, earning this comic a recommendation. Give it a read.
