Pins, Patches, And Pies…The Archive Party 3 At Star Wars Celebration

The Chive Cast held their Celebration shindig Thursday night at the Hyatt, and boy was it a blast. For those of you who don't know, The Chive Cast is a monthly Star Wars Collecting podcast that defys most descriptions. One part a look back at figures from the original Kenner Star Wars line, they also write haikus and parody songs about figures ( I still have TIE Pilot stuck in my head) and have a wacky series of regular guests who even have their own theme music. It is the official podcast of The Star Wars Collectors Archive. Hosted by Skye Paine (fun) and Stephen B. Danley, it is the most fun I have as a vintage collector every month. So, being at Celebration this year, I jumped at the chance to attend The Archive Party 3.

Let me tell you something: it was a ton of fun. Also benefiting the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, there were all sorts of things that I was not expecting to see there, although now that I think about it I didn't know what to expect. There were raffles and silent auctions benefiting the Pet Alliance. There were games, like Vader Case Mania to see how fast you can fill a Vintage Vader Case with vintage figures, a game where you had to try and toss a wrap onto the Rancor Keepers head, and Pie in the Skye. With that one, you paid money to buy tickets and then got to throw a pie in his face onstage. Sadly, I did not happen to get a picture of this, as I got distracted by the best part about Celebration: pin and patch trading.

Social Star Wars clubs, collecting clubs, and random people all over the place have made special patches and pins just for the week in limited quantities, spanning all of Star Wars but mostly with a focus on collectibles. I had no clue how addicting this would be. Basically, you find someone with a SWAG under their name, talk to them, and get your first piece. Then, you are off. And just when you think you have seen the coolest patch or pin you could, the next persons is even cooler, so you keep trading and trading. Patches are usually worth other patches and pins worth other pins, but people are flexible. By the end of the party, I started with nothing and left with some great stuff! I love the Thrawn patches.

The coolest/most Chive Castiest thing to happen there was the marriage of two long-time collectors on stage twards the end of the event. They both looked quite happy, and commemorated the event with an adorable piece of swag nobody would trade: an Ewok pin. Congrats again Shawna and Jarrod!

All in all, I had a blast, interacted with uber-collectors like Steve Sansweet and Gus Lopez, and got some free food and booze in the process. Count me in for the next one. Wampa Wampa.
